Rage of the Fanboys – You say you want a ResurrXion

Mutants

They’ve faced all kinds of dangers from giant government funded military grade robots, omega level witches that can shift reality and of course, those darn Inhumans that just want to make more of themselves while killing off mutants in the process.

That’s just the stuff they have to deal with in their own 616 universe as in our own reality, mutants aren’t really worth that much brand wise to the House of Mouse.

Which puts Marvel in a bit of a bind as to what can they possibly do to please the fans of this long running and beloved franchise to get them back into the good graces of fans once more.

Currently there’s still X-Men titles ongoing and despite how grim the title Death of X sounds like if you’re a fan of mutants such as Scott Summers, there’s some hope on the horizon.

It’s Logan! The newest solo Wolverine movie from 20th century Fox that will surely do much better than that last X-Men film – Go check out the trailer in one of our other EXCITING articles, I’ll wait right here.

Ok, wasn’t that pretty great? Now what if I told you that parts of that movie were based on thing called comic books and that at some point, Disney didn’t really seem that interested in giving the spotlight to franchise that is completely owned by them.

So what does this have to deal with comic books? Oh right, those things.

Xavier hoping that none of them involve Bendis

Well, after the mutants are done being kicked in the shin with the upcoming heroes vs heroes mentality of Inhumans vs X-Men, there will be a RESURRXION – the newest relaunch of X related mutants from big possible names such as Wolverine or the adorable Nature Girl, it could even have Jamie Mad-… Oh right. Well, I’m sure there will be tons of fan favourites to go about as Marvel seems ready to mend the fences with RESURRXION.

Get it, cause it’s like resurrection but with an X. I mean it didn’t work out that great when Aliens did it but throw in the X could be the magic touch.

What the hell is a Resurrxion? Whatever it is, Marvel wants YOU to remember that they still think mutants are neat if they generate sales so here’s a whole bunch of titles with my keen insightful picks as to who would be the best fit for each title in no particular order

generation-xGeneration X – With a limited amount of Marvel exclusive writers floating about, this title could match up with Ewing (Conquest of Champions/New Avengers) as the plucky tone of Sunspot running his own team by his own rules could easily fit with Generation X unconventional team of mutants.

I could also see this book going to Hopeless (All New X-Men) since he’s already doing a teenage mutant team involving of the time travel X-Men members from the past such as Jean, Scott and Hank. The downside is that the current ongoing for New X-Men is rather dull and the Apocalypse War event dragged on with very little pay off.

Iceman – This book really needs someone to give it a purpose as Bendis has done damage to the character already with the forced diversity angle (Cause Northstar isn’t mainstream enough for virtue points), what can they really explore with this character?

If it was a fun team up book like Spiderman/Deadpool, Conway would be an ideal choice as he’s managed to write Deadpool as laughable but surprisingly sorrowful character that works best when paired with others.

Jean – If it’s hard enough to sell an Iceman solo book, a Jean Grey series is hard enough to justify as well. The two characters have plenty of history but that’s all off the table as the focus is on the younger selves coming to terms with what their older selves have done.

This also reflects on the current state of Marvel deals with their female characters. While most get the quirky girl treatment that reads like a half ass tumblr web comic that pines about a soap box, it firmly tosses out what the character is about and becomes a mouth piece in obvious manner.

Now if this was only a few years ago, Kathryn Immomen would be great choice for this as a follow up from Sif’s Journey Into Mystery or Hellcat’s time spent up north in Alaska but this Marvel NOW so the pickings are slim.

With that being said, James Robinson (Scarlet Witch/Squadron Supreme) could provide a solid grasp on the character, more in vein for Jessica Jones’ street level tone rather than the flavour of the month from Leth.

Cable – Now here’s a title that has Lemire all over it. I find that with Old Man Logan that the characterization is spot on and exactly what I’d expect from the title, there’s a lingering feeling that there’s still a missing piece – a purpose that the character should serve other than just existing.

With Cable, a lot of that leg work has been done already such as in Uncanny Avenger’s run with the Unity squad as Cable has some clear goals in mind and he’ll butt heads with anyone that gets in his way.

Another sign of this being the perfect match? Lemire’s work on Bloodshot gives as an exciting preview of what Cable could feel like and it could easily kindle the creative fire that feels a bit absent from Extraordinary X-Men/Old Man Logan.

Weapon X – I’m gonna throw a wild card out there for this one as Becky Cloonan is already doing Punisher and depending on the characters that show up in this title, this could be pretty interesting.

I feel that Cloonan is pretty well versed in the range of books that she’s working on. On one hand, we have a gritty book like the Punisher but over at DC, Gotham Academy has that Harry Potter in Gotham charm that strikes a tone with kids and adults.

If this book has a similar team as the Wolverines, it’d line up with those coming of age teens getting mixed up with something deadly.

X-Men Gold/Blue – the flag staff books that will set the overall tone for the rest of the rosters to riff with needs a fairly steady set of writers to work with each other in the way that current Bat titles work in relation as King/Batman, Tomasi/Detectives and Steeley/Nightwing.

I’d most likely go with Cunn/Soule for the one book and Gerry Duggan for the other title. Since most of the promo art seems to hint at a classic team for Gold, I’d have to say that being in charge of what the current Avengers Unity Squad is dealing with that on the flip side, a classic X-Men team makes sense for Duggan to handle.

x-men-gold

It’d make plenty of sense for Bunn to handle the other team as he’s already doing a run with Magneto’s brand of X-Men, so why not switch up the roster in that case.
Overall, I really hope Marvel takes into account that having one guy being in charge of everything happening in 616 universe has done damage to the brand and that there’s no quick fix to the situation despite how much work they have under their belt. If Bendis or Waid get involved with any of the books, my interest is dropped completely. x-men-blue

That’s it all of them for now unless of course we get a Doop ongoing or Hope Summers series again after all Manic showed back up in Venom Space Knight so anyone with X Gene could be touting their own team or solo series.

Hopefully with these new titles, the once prized franchises will be handled a bit better than they currently have and that the creative teams get a chance to own their titles rather than get tied up with useless Event crossovers and relaunches as many other comic book related forums have spoken up in disapproval and this might be their best chance to getting some love back that is sorely needed.

In a nutshell, don’t mess this up.
