The Walking Dead: S702 “The Well” – Our Review

Check out our review of this weeks episode “The Well” of The Walking Dead on AMC.

The Walking Dead – Season 7 episode 02: “The Well”

Warning: There will be spoilers.

Let’s get into it, not recapping just diving in…

Robert: I’m gonna try to get into it but I’ve injured my hand so I’ll see how well / much I can write.

Ian: SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVA!

Robert: After last week’s overwhelming episode with the death of Glenn & Abraham, The Walking Dead needed a complete change of pace. This week, we got that with a crazy, awesome CGI Tiger. We. Got. A. Tiger. Oh and a King. Lastly, we see what Negan has his fingers in everyone around our protagonists.

Ian: Given that every promo was building up Negan’s big bad debut, Carol/Morgan arc kinda just faded out and now that the carnage from the season premiere  is over, we get into the thick of it – What’s the deal with the hockey pad wearing guys from last season? What’s the Kingdom? Will there be LARPING?

Robert: Hahahahaha TWD LARPING?! Let’s be Werewolves and take on the Walke… oh NO! They’re not respecting the Code of… they’re BITING ME!! 😀 😀 😀

Robert: Now besides Morgan & Carol arriving & recovering in the Kingdom of Ezekiel, the main story is all about Carol. Ezekiel extends his hand to help Carol because he wants to. It’s exactly what Carol needs!

Ian: I really enjoyed Carol’s reaction to first rounds of the tour and the big welcome speech that Ezekiel has been preparing most likely since they got here. She’s dumbfounded by his mannerisms but is still in that polite mood to not dismiss him outright, sorta like when she was back at Alexandria.

Robert: So was this episode that good because of Shiva, the tiger? No, it was great because it allowed us to feel for Carol & Morgan. We got new insight on how the Kingdom works, who is Ezekiel & the extended reach of Negan & The Saviors.

Robert: Morgan might have found a new direction, a new path for himself in The Kingdom and I’m thinking now matter what happens next to our protagonists, he may have just found a new purpose and group to be with.

Ian: It’s been a long time since Morgan has actually had a measure of purpose that isn’t just disagreeing with Rick. His skills alone catch the eye of Ezekiel but unlike Rick, he also notices a spiritual lacking as well and he hopes to fill that void by giving Morgan a project – mentoring one of the younger guards, showing him the ways of hitting walkers with a stick.

Robert: Carol goes through some interesting turn as the beginning, she’s seeing the Walkers / Zombies as they were almost to the cost of her life. It seems as though Carol fakes being a timid woman who’s happy to be in the Kingdom but really, she just wants to leave because she’s lost her purpose in whatever life they have these days. She doesn’t believe anyone in the Kingdom knows “how it’s really like out there” because she’s so lost in her own angst. It takes Ezekiel to pull her out of it, the “leave but not leave” is one of the best written introduction of a new character but also saving another on this show. Kudos to writer Matthew Negrete & direction by Greg Nicotero along with both Melissa McBride, Lennie James & Khary Payton (from Young Justice fame as Kaldur’ahm / Aqualad / Black Manta).

Ian: It’s interesting that while with Rick, it was always the need of the group that was the weight on Carol’s shoulders as she had to step up to make tough choices. Her doubt and suspicion is pretty earnest given that the idea of shelter being too good to be true as gone south more than single time but Ezekiel’s behavior is the key difference.

Ian: While there’s no doubt that Ezekiel enjoys an aspect of his larger than life persona since everything went to hell, he realizes that it’s role that wasn’t asked of him but that he felt necessary to fulfill. I do find it a bit interesting that they went over his origin story in the same episode of his introduction to the show but the way it was done by Ezekiel showing that he has a kinship with Carol seems like it was done in low key romance angle as the two of them most likely will be sharing a lot of screen time together.

Robert: Overall, this was a great episode that introduced us to The Kingdom, King Ezekiel, Shiva the Tiger and the reach of Negan. Well done, well acted and wonderful pacing. I’m almost excited to see The Kingdom take the fight to Negan one day.

Ian: There was plenty of levity going on to switch it up from how grim the previous episode is but it’s still a rough world out there, will The Kingdom be able to survive with the help of Morgan and Carol? Will AMC be able to forward another glorious CGI shot of Shiva? Have we seen a new hashtag shipper bait with Carzekiel?

Bits & Pieces

  • I’m scared of a romance between Ezekiel and Carol as it’s TWD means it’s likely to end poorly.
  • Holy Crap is Jerry, Ezekiel’s butler, a fun new supporting character.
  • Feeding the pigs zombie meat for Negan’s food is twisted.
  • Will Morgan be the spark to rally the people of The Kingdom against Negan?
  • Is Morgan training more Jedi? We shouldn’t get too attached to the kid.

Next Week…

Seems like it’s all about Daryl as a Savior prisoner next week. Will Negan be able to break Daryl or just kill him?!
